Advanced laparoscopic gynaecological surgery, also known as keyhole surgery, is a minimally invasive procedure that seeks to reduce trauma and recovery time.

This modern technique involves the use of a small telescope (laparoscope) inserted through a small incision, usually in the belly button, to provide a high-definition view of the abdominal and pelvic organs.

The video camera fitted to the laparoscope allows the surgeon to observe the organs on a screen in real-time. Images may also be taken for later review. This method of surgery is an effective and efficient way to diagnose and treat various conditions of the reproductive system.

Laparoscopy Step by Step Process

Step 1

General anaesthesia will be administered to you before the procedure to keep you asleep and free from pain. An IV line is placed in one of your veins to deliver medications and fluids.

Step 2

Your surgeon will create a small incision beneath your navel and insert a cannula, a small tube that inflates your abdomen with carbon dioxide gas. The gas helps your surgeon see your organs more clearly.

Step 3

The laparoscope, a thin tube with a camera, is inserted through the incision to view your organs. The images are displayed on a monitor, enabling your surgeon to perform the surgery.

Step 4

The number and size of incisions depend on the type of surgery. Typically, one to four incisions that measure between 1 and 2 centimetres in length are made to allow other instruments to be inserted.

Step 5

After the procedure, the instruments are removed and the incisions are closed with stitches or surgical tape. Bandages may be applied to the incisions. You may be discharged on the same day, but you should avoid strenuous activities for a few days while you recover.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the advantages of laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that offers numerous advantages over traditional open surgeries. It allows for excellent visualization of organs, minimal trauma to organs, smaller incisions with less chance of wound infection or breakdown, and much less formation of adhesions (scar tissue).

Moreover, hospital stays are shorter, and recovery time is significantly faster, allowing for quicker mobilization of the patient with less risk of postoperative complications.

What are the risks of laparoscopy?

Although laparoscopy is a safe and effective procedure, there are some risks associated with it. These include infection, bleeding, damage to abdominal organs, glands, intestines, or blood vessels, inflammation of the abdominal wall (peritonitis), and blood clots that enter the bloodstream and block arteries in the lung, pelvis, or legs.

How will I feel following a laparoscopy?

Following a laparoscopic procedure, some pain and discomfort is normal and expected. Patients may experience pain in the shoulders, neck, and abdomen, as the gas used during the procedure may not be completely removed. These symptoms typically resolve within 12-24 hours with bed rest. Nausea may occur due to abdominal distention or manipulation of the bowel during the procedure, or as a result of the anaesthesia.

How many eggs should be obtained?

When undergoing egg collection, it is impossible to guarantee the exact number of eggs that can be retrieved. However, the highest success rates are achieved when 10-15 eggs are collected. Successful treatment does not only depend on the number of eggs retrieved, but also on the quality of the eggs.
