Freezing Turkey

Egg freezing is a great way to preserve your future fertility. Ultimately, the younger you freeze your eggs – the better.  If you’re not ready for kids just yet, you can use your eggs later on when you’re ready to have children.

Egg freezing is becoming increasingly popular among women and couples who want to preserve their fertility until they’re ready to start a family. This modern method of family planning allows women to store their eggs until the time is right for them.

Whether it’s waiting for the right relationship, feeling emotionally prepared, being financially secure, or focusing on career goals, egg freezing gives women the power to choose when they’re ready to become parents.

This process involves collecting, freezing and storing some of a woman’s younger, more fertile eggs so that they can be used at a later date. Those who opt for egg freezing are typically women who are in their twenties or early thirties.

Although, the process is becoming popular among women of all ages, who may not wish to become parents any time soon. This offers them the ability to plan for the future and remain in control of their reproductive destiny.

Egg Freezing Step by Step Process

When you have decided to go ahead with the egg freezing, we are here to help you all the way from the initial contact and until your eggs are frozen and stored at UK Turkey IVF Clinic.   The complete egg freezing process takes up to 8 weeks and includes the following steps:

Step 1

Hormonal Suppression

Before the egg freezing process begins, hormonal suppression may be used to temporarily turn off your natural hormones. Birth control pills are commonly used for this step. By suppressing your natural hormones, the effect of the hormone therapy that follows can be increased, leading to the development of multiple mature eggs in the ovaries.

The duration of this step is usually between 2 to 4 weeks, but in urgent cases, it may be skipped.

Step 2

Hormonal Stimulation

Once the hormonal suppression is complete, the next step is hormonal stimulation. This involves administering hormone injections to stimulate the ovaries to develop multiple mature eggs. This process typically lasts for 10 to 14 days and requires 4 to 6 visits to the clinic for ultrasounds and bloodwork to monitor progress.

Step 3

Ovulation Trigger

When the ovarian follicles have reached an appropriate level of maturity, a medication will be administered to trigger ovulation. Timing is crucial at this stage to ensure the success of the egg retrieval.

Step 4

Egg Retrieval

Egg retrieval is a minimally invasive procedure that is typically performed under intravenous sedation. An ultrasound-guided needle is used to retrieve the mature eggs from the ovarian follicles. While the procedure is generally painless, some women may experience some bloating and soreness afterwards.

Step 5

Egg Freezing

After the egg retrieval, the mature eggs are evaluated to ensure that only viable ones are frozen. The embryologists then use a process called vitrification to freeze the eggs. Vitrification involves replacing the liquid inside the egg with a cryoprotectant and then rapidly freezing the egg in liquid nitrogen. This process preserves the eggs at extremely low temperatures (-196°C) until they are ready to be thawed for future use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I Qualify for Egg Freezing?

If you’re a woman in good health with some healthy eggs and not yet ready to have a baby, then egg freezing could be an option for you. To begin with, you’ll have a fertility health check to determine your fertility and overall health. Afterward, one of our consultants will assess how egg freezing could be useful for you.

What is the Egg Freezing Process Like?

The egg retrieval process is the same as that used for IVF. To collect more eggs, the ovaries are stimulated with self-injected medicine for 8-14 days. During this time, ultrasound monitoring will help determine the best time for egg collection.

Collection takes place at our UK Turkey Health Centre, and it takes 15-20 minutes while you are lightly sedated. On average, 8-15 eggs are collected, with mature eggs identified, frozen, and stored until you decide to use them in the future. At that time, the eggs will be thawed and used in a regular IVF cycle.

Is it Painful?

Most people don’t find the injections too painful, as the needles are very thin. Some women experience bloating or cramping while taking the medication, but these effects stop after egg collection. The transvaginal ultrasound exams don’t cause pain, though they can be uncomfortable.

As for the egg retrieval, you won’t feel anything while you’re sedated. Once you wake up, you may experience some soreness or abdominal cramping.

What are the Success Rates of Frozen Eggs?

It’s worth noting that freezing your eggs does not guarantee a baby in the future. Although more than 90% of frozen eggs will survive the thawing process, there are still other steps to consider. These include a successful fertilisation with either your partner’s or donor’s sperm, continued development of the resulting embryo, and then a successful embryo transfer with implantation into the uterus.

Furthermore, the number of live births resulting from the frozen eggs depends on the age of the woman and the number of eggs collected. For instance, if 10 eggs are frozen and the woman is 30 years of age, the probability of achieving one live birth is 69%. For 20 eggs, this probability increases to 90%. The same applies to a woman who is 37
